Public Information Resources

Shasta Mosquito and Vector Control District serves an area of approximately 387 square miles in the northern Sacramento Valley, encompassing the cities of Anderson, Redding and Shasta Lake City and substantial surrounding unincorporated areas.  In addition to an ongoing program of mosquito and vector surveillance and control, we maintain an active and growing public information program.  We feel that educating the public to the importance of vector-related problems, and vector prevention and control is an important part of a comprehensive and efficient mosquito and vector control program to protect the health and comfort of our constituents.

Our biologist and public information specialist, John Albright () is always happy to talk to classrooms and civic organizations about mosquitoes, vector control and District activities.  Prior to coming to work for the Shasta Mosquito and Vector Control District he worked for eight years with the Shasta County Department of Agriculture, Weights and Measures where he also did similar informational presentations to the public. Subjects of presentations that he has given have included mosquito life cycle, prevention and control, general vector information,  West Nile Virus, Africanized honeybee, European honeybees and beekeeping, biological control and integrated pest management, and careers in biology and vector control.  John is always happy to talk to the press and public about any sort of matters related to vector control, current vector-related issues and District functions.  For information on more sensitive issues, such as District policies, planning and budget, questions should be directed to our District Manager, Bill Hazeleur, who can be reached through the following email link: .

For persons wishing to arrange a presentation by John Albright some advanced notice is greatly appreciated.  If you would like to ask John a question or request a presentation or field trip you can do this quickly with our Ask the Biologist Online Form.   The best times of the year for presentations to classrooms are in the spring and early fall when insect specimens are readily available as visual aids.  Slide and PowerPoint presentations can be put together and presented at pretty much any time of the year to almost any type of group.  The District has its own laptop and projector for PowerPoint presentations.

A variety or materials are available at the Shasta Mosquito and Vector Control District to provide information and raise public awareness about a variety of mosquito and vector related issues.  Some of these materials may be directly downloaded to your computer.  To view a list of our brochures, bookmarks, activity books, CDs and stickers follow this link.  John Albright is also happy to search our extensive files and references for information to help students write reports on topics related to mosquito and vector control.

For classes interested in taking a field trip we offer field trips in our educational center.  This includes a PowerPoint presentation followed up with outdoor demonstrations and a tour of our facility.  We can customize a presentation to fit with the teacher's lesson plans and currently we have programs on mosquito and vector control, wetland ecology, laboratory and surveillance functions, and the importance of public awareness.
