The Right Question John Albright, Shasta Mosquito and Vector Control District
At the Shasta Mosquito and Vector Control District we pride ourselves on giving good customer service. One of the important services we provide is to dispense information on a wide range of pest problems. District personnel are always happy to share what we know and welcome questions of all types from our constituents within the district. We believe that all questions are good questions and we do our best to give useful answers. Some questions are better than others, however. It seems like the simple questions are the hardest to answer. One common question which seems straightforward is, "What can I spray to get rid of the mosquitoes in my yard?" The simple, and most correct answer would be, "Nothing! Next question please." Obviously this is of no help to the homeowner so we try to steer them toward a more useful line of questioning. The question we were usually fishing for is, "How can I get rid of mosquitoes around my yard?" The correct answer then becomes, "Let us send a trained technician out to determine what kind of mosquitoes you have, where they are coming from, and what is the most effective method of achieving relief from the problem." The fact of the matter is that no matter what you ask about your particular mosquito problem we will try to maneuver the conversation around until we can say, "Let us send a trained technician out to determine what kind of mosquitoes you have, where they are coming from, and what is the most effective method of achieving relief from the problem." It's really a great answer to a lot of questions, and it has taken many years for us to perfect it. Unfortunately it makes us sound like we are avoiding committing ourselves to an answer, while trying to drum up business for ourselves. People crave simple answers that take care of problems in one easy step. Three quarters of a century of mosquito control in Shasta County has taught us that there is no single one-step answer to all mosquito problems. Every nuance of climate, season, moisture, and habitat will change the mosquito problem from one homeowner to the next. That is why our technicians all receive special training and certification in mosquito control. We use a wide variety of different techniques to control mosquitoes within the district, and base our mosquito control decisions on the best available science on the subject. If you live within the Shasta Mosquito and Vector Control District you have already paid for our services and expertise.
